The Chinese Oracle Bone Script (甲骨文） was the earliest known Chinese writing first appeared in late Shang Dynasty (ca. 1500 - 1050 BC). This earliest Chinese writing appears pictographic and is most often found in turtle shells or animal bones recording the foretelling of events by the Shang royal houses. The writing of characters is generally in vertical columns, from top to bottom and left to right. It was first discovered in late 19th century. Of the thousands of characters recorded from the bone or turtle shell fragments, the majority remain undeciphered.
