The Chinese scripts on this table runner are actually an excerpt of ancient Chinese musical notation sheet for an ancient woodwind instrument known as “huqie”. In ancient China, the court musicians invented a musical notation describing the finger movements, strings, pitches and rhythms with Chinese scripts. This music sheet, titled “Da Huqie”, meaning “large huqie”, was first written in the late Han Dynasty (ca 25 AD - 220 AD) in this ancient Chinese script notation and later rewritten with simplified Chinese scripts known as “jianzi pu 减字谱”, meaning “reduced- stroke notation” specifically designed to record the finger movements and strings without recording pitches and rhythms . The version of the musical notes printed on this table runner was excerpted from such “jianzi pu” published in Ming Dynasty (ca. 1368 – 1644 AD).
