This is a collection of Chinese classic poems by some of best known poets from Han, Tang and Song Dynasties, such as Li Bai, Du Mu, Su Shi, Li Shang Yin, Wang An Shi, which richly depicted the beauty of the landscapes of ancient China. Each poem is interpreted by a traditional ink-brush painting by Yuan Li Li, a noted Chinese ink-brush painting artist who presently resides in Germany. This collection is compiled by R&D Center of Beijing Language University as a part of Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language (TCFL) Textbooks series.
The 30 poems compiled in this book are among the most loved in Chinese history and remain popular in today's China. These poems share the same feature in that they were written in relatively simple Chinese characters and phrases and yet rich and elegant in depicting the poets' self-reflection amid the beautiful mountains and streams of the nature. The book is specifically designed to encourage the beginner-level students to learn Chinese by reading aloud. The accompanying CD allows students to follow the recording while reading the pinyin notation on each characters of the poems.
To aid a student's better understanding of the poems while learning Chinese, all of the poems are simply annotated and paraphrased in English without overly expending the complexity in the expression with the use of particular characters in the poems. A brief introduction of the poet for each poem is also included so students may advance to further readings of other poems written by the same poet.
